Five tips to get you started on the accessibility road in 2014
Are you new to the area of accessibility? Have you been working for a while to embed accessibility within your organisation? Whether you are new to the area or you would like to continuously improve access within the organisation, here are five tips that can help you improve accessibility during 2014:
- Appoint someone within the organisation with responsibility for implementing accessibility. Establish an access team, representative of your organisation. That way all of the key people within your organisation can be making an impact to the overall accessibility of the organisation.
- Prepare a high level accessibility policy and three year action plan. This plan must address information provision, human resources, the built environment and services accessibility. Make a commitment to improving accessibility within the organisation. Assign responsibility and monitor progress.
- Provide pre-visit information (i.e. on the website, through access guides, on your brochures and forms) on how your organisation addresses accessibility.
- Provide staff with disability awareness training. Remember staff are key to ensuring the successfully delivery of an accessible service.
- Address procurement and accessibility: Ensure all goods and services bought by your organisation are accessible. Embedding accessibility into the procurement process is key.
