New Inclusive Design Standards published by the London Legacy Development Corporation – May 2019
The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) launched the second edition of their Inclusive Design Standards in May 2019. The standards highlight that LLDC has developed a process to help deliver Inclusive Design across all its development projects, and to create inclusive places and neighbourhoods in east London. Parts of this process include; the appointment of an Inclusive Design champion, preparing Inclusive Design standrards, supporting an independent built environment access panel, and always looking for new ways to innovate and remain at the forefront of inclusive urban design.
This new edition of the standards has been divided into four main parts:
- Achieving inclusive neighbourhoods
- Movement
- Residential developments
- Public buildings
Each Inclusive Design standard includes two sections – the design intent and the inclusive design guidelines. Some examples of the standards include:
- Achieving inclusive neighbourhoods – Site Planning.
- Movement – Public realm, pedestrian routes, cycle lanes, mobility scooter parking, assistance dog facilities, external passenger lifts, and inclusive play.
- Residential developments – Inclusive housing, communal lifts, faith and cultural considerations, and student accommodation.
- Public buildings – Access control, receptions, Changing Place facilities, glazing, floor finishes, signage and information, emergency egress, and multi-faith facilities (including wash cubicles).
