Mobility without barriers – on foot, by bicycle or by public transport
People with reduced mobility, who comprise about one third of the European population, face many barriers in public space and public transport (www.isemoa.eu). To overcome the many barriers faced by people with reduced mobility the European Commission has funded a three year project entitled “Improving seamless energy-efficient mobility chains for all (ISEMOA)”.
The project aims to help local and regional authorities in Europe to increase energy-efficiency in transport by improving the accessibility of door-to-door mobility-chains and thus enabling all citizens and visitors including people with reduced mobility to adopt a less car-dependent life-style.
ISEMOA has also developed a standardised Quality Management system to support municipalities, cities and regions in their efforts to improve the accessibility of public spaces and public transport.
By improving the accessibility of the whole mobility-chain, local and regional authorities can enable people with reduced mobility to adopt a less car-dependent lifestyle and use sustainable modes (walking, cycling, and public transport) instead.
At the core of the ISEMOA scheme is a moderated audit process that helps local and regional stakeholders to assess together with an external auditor, the state of accessibility of public space and public transport in their area and to develop strategies and measures to continuously improve the quality of accessibility.
Further details on the Improving seamless energy-efficient mobility chains for all are available here and we will also provide an update on how you can get involved in the ISEMOA initiative in our next newsletter.
