Disability Statistics Factsheet published by the National Disability Authority
The lives of people with disabilities in Ireland will be examined in a series of factsheets developed by the NDA. The first factsheet of the series (published in October 2018) examines the number of people with a disability and some of their characteristics. The information in the first factsheet was retrieved from the 2016 Census and from work which was undertaken by researchers in the National Disability Authority.
The factsheet entitled ‘NDA Factsheet 1: Disability Statistics’ examines these different aspects under the following headings:

- Common types of disability
- Age and disability
- Disability rates by area
- Disability and Employment
- Education
- What will happen in the future?
Some of the statistics provided in the factsheet include:
- 643,131 people in Ireland have a disability according to the 2016 Census. That is 1 in 7 people, which is a slight increase on the 2011 Census figures.
- Most people with a disability are of working age – 54% are aged between 19-65. But as most disability is acquired during our lives, older people are more likely to have a disability than younger people.
- Only 6.3% (120,775) of all workers have a disability.
- Slightly more females (13.8%) than males (13.2%) have a disability, mostly because women live longer than men.
- 13% of people with a disability have a degree or higher qualification compared to 25% of people without a disability.
- The Irish population will grow to 5.2 million by 2026. Because there will be both more people and more older people, there will be more people with a disability. By 2026, it is expected that the number of people with a disability will have increased by 20%.
