Employment and Disability Factsheet published by the National Disability Authority
In December 2018, the National Disability Authority (NDA) published the first factsheet highlighting disability statistics taken from the 2016 census (e.g. there are 643,131 people in Ireland have a disability according to the 2016 Census).
The second factsheet in the series (April 2019) covers the topic of employment and disability. The factsheet examines these different aspects relating to employment under a number of headings including: The labour force participation rate; Work rates for people with different types of disability; Reasons people give for not being in the labour force and change in employment rate over time.
Some of the statistics provided in the Disability and Employment factsheet include:
- 36.5% of all people with a disability are at work, that is 120, 775 people with a disability aged 20-64 working compared to 72.8% of all people without a disability are at work – that is 1,807,748 people without a disability aged 20-64 who are working.
- Half of the people with a disability are in the labour force compared to 82.3% of people without a disability.
- People with a disability in the labour force are less likely to be employed and more likely to be unemployed than people without a disability.
- Only one in six of people with an intellectual disability have a job (17.3%).
- The employment rate for people with a disability has improved from 26.2% (in 2010) to 27.7% (in 2017). However, the gap in rate of employment has very slightly widened. People without a disability were 2.3 times more likely to be employed in 2010 than people with a disability, but in 2017, they were 2.5 times more likely to be employed.
