UK Inclusive Transport Strategy
In July of this year the Department of Transport, UK set out its Inclusive Transport Strategy: achieving equal access for disabled people. This strategy will focus on improving accessibility for all including elderly citizens and those with both visible and less visible disabilities, and aims at creating a fully accessible transport system by 2030.
In this strategy it is recognised that an inclusive transport network is essential to building a stronger fairer economy, it supports business and employment, connects communities, helps prevents loneliness and isolation by providing access to those who might otherwise be unable to travel. It is also recognised in this strategy that easy access to travel is not the reality for all citizens.
To address this, the strategy outlines five main themes:
1. Awareness and enforcement of passenger rights
2. Staff training for both frontline and managerial staff
3. Improving accessibility of information
4. Improving physical infrastructure
5. The future of inclusive transport
The strategy also includes:
-
Funding for the provision of Changing Places toilets at motorway service stations across the UK,
-
Funding for the provision of audio and visual equipment on buses,
-
A passenger awareness campaign to increase disability awareness and reduce hate crime on the bus network
-
An accreditation scheme for transport operators to receive formal recognition for positive work to improve disabled passengers’ experiences, such as training frontline staff and senior management on disability awareness
-
Ensuring that accessibility and inclusive design is future technology is designed inclusively from the outset, with opportunities sought to harness innovation
