UK Disability History Month celebrates its 12th year

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event that started in 2010 which aims to create a platform to focus on the history of persons with disabilities and their strive for equality. Throughout this month, it is important to recognise that people with disabilities have multiple identities that might form part of other groups that are subjected to discrimination and that persons with disabilities are diverse in terms of the type and range of impairment they experience (cognitive, physical, neurodiverse, etc.).

Typically, UKDHM runs from 18th November until 18th December and includes a variety of important days of note; including HIV/AIDS Day (1st December), International Day of People with Disabilities (3rd December), International Human Rights Day (10th December), which follows on directly from Anti-Bullying Week (19th to 23rd November). This is important seeing as there is approximately 2.5 times more bullying recorded towards persons with disabilities as compared to non-disabled persons.

Every year considers a different theme to highlight certain topics. The theme for 2021 is joint to include:

Disability and Hidden Impairment
Disability Sex and Relationships

An online launch event will be held on the 18th of November 2021 which will explore each of the topics listed above and provide more information on the various events/campaigns that will take place during the course of the month.

Visit the UKDHM’s website to find out more about:
