University College Cork develop smartphone application to assist students with visual impairments getting around the Campus
We have written many articles in the past on the importance of good signage and wayfinding strategies to assist in the ease of use of buildings and their surroundings.
Here is the latest example of how one Irish University is leading the way to ensure all students, visitors and staff including students with visual impairments can easily get around the campus by developing a smartphone app to assist people getting around the University.
The smartphone app is being developed by the department of computer science in partnership with the disability service at UCC. And will further assist in the extensive orientation training already given to guide dog and long cane users on campus by the disability service at UCC.
The new application can provide students with their exact location on campus, outline the best route for them to take to their required destination and can also help students find services on campus.
