Are we still ignoring the importance of accessibility in the management and maintenance of our buildings?
OHAC have recently been involved in a number of major building developments in Ireland. Throughout these projects we have been asking a number of important questions like:
- How is the organisation going to ensure events that take place in the building are accessible?
- What pre-visit information are you going to provide to potential visitors?
- How are you going to ensure that the accessibility features of the building are well maintained (e.g. testing of hearing enhancement systems)?
- When repairs and refurbishments works take place in the future, how will accessibility be addressed?
- How does the organisation consult with people with disabilities?
- Have risk assessments taken place to identify the health and safety needs of customers with disabilities?
What is really important here is that embedding accessibility into the operations and day to day management of the building is equally as important to the design of the building itself.
