ZICLA and Pittman develop Irelands first Vectorial Bus Platform
In the effort to promote social distancing and to improve accessibility at bus stops, both for people with disabilities and general users, Dublin City Council has recently installed Ireland’s first Vectorial Bus Platform from Pittman and ZICLA on North Circular Road.
The aim of this project, as stated by ZICLA, was to develop a solution that was simple and quick to install. It should also be flexible and temporary as there will no longer be a need for extra space at the bus stops once the Covid-19 pandemic is over. In addition to that, it seems to effectively resolve the conflict between bikes and bus stops, creating islands and refuges for pedestrians.
The platform has a modular system with attachable elements that can be laid parallel to the direction of the street, and also towards the street. It is manufactured with recycled material and is designed to be visible and resistant to compression, impacts, and bad weather. The Vectorial Bus Platform holds many advantages, which are listed below.
- It can easily be adapted to fit into the available space.
- It is competitive price in comparison to other prefabricated systems and permanent works.
- It is an environmental-friendly product.
- Visibility during day and night is ensured by its reflexive strips on the sides.
- The possibility to personalize both texture and color of its non-slip surface.
Though the Vectorial Bus Platform is a temporary solution, it might be necessary to evaluate the practicability of the product and consider a more permanent solution to upgrade the accessibility of public transport.
