Accessibility and Inclusive Tourism Development – Compendium of Best Practices
A new publication, Accessibility and Inclusive Tourism Development – Compendium of Best Practices, has been launched,. The document was produced by a Working Group on Accessible Tourism, coordinated by the The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Affiliate Members Department and chaired by the Spanish Network for Accessible Tourism (Red Estable).
It is intended that this publication will provide a valuable resource and tool for all relevant stakeholders in making their tourist destinations, facilities and services in natural areas inclusive and accessible for all.
The publication focuses on 11 world projects on accessible tourism in nature areas, divided into 3 categories:
- Accessibility in inland nature spaces (natural parks, nature areas);
- Accessibility in natural spaces in coastal areas (beaches, maritime areas);
- Accessible tourist services in nature areas.
Within each of the 11 world projects, the case study identifies the main accessibility actions carried out and provides information on how barriers were addressed in 3 key areas: physical – architectural barriers, attitudinal barriers, and information and assistive technology barriers.
The case studies also summarise the achievements, shortcomings, lessons learned and replication potential of each of the 11 world projects. This, which provides information and guidance to stakeholders on how actions and initiatives can be implemented to make their tourist destinations, facilities and services in natural areas inclusive and accessible for all.
