Incorporating accessibility into the day to day operations of a building
When is the last time you tested the hearing induction loop at your reception, or checked the unisex accessible WCs to see if the alarms are working correctly and not tied up? How often do you check the nosings in your stairwells or audible announcements in the lift? These are some of the elements that are important to ensure accessibility is well maintained within the day to day operations of your building. They also contribute to making sure your buildings are easy to use for everyone.
OHAC recommend that as part of the overall facilities management programme accessibility is a key criteria that must be addressed on an ongoing basis. The following list provides a number of ways to ensure this is achieved.
- Ensure that the accessibility features of the building are well maintained (e.g. testing of hearing enhancement systems, platform lifts, alarms).
- Carry out routine checks on accessibility throughout the building. An accessibility checklist should be prepared and maintenance checks carried out regularly.
- When carrying out repairs and refurbishments works ensure accessibility is addressed and incorporated into the works.
- Consult with people with disabilities and identify their needs.
- Carry out risk assessments to identify the health and safety needs of customers with disabilities.
- Ensure that all events taking place within your organization are inclusive and accessible.
- Provide pre-visit information on the accessible facilities in place, points of contacts etc.
