Making housing accessible for all
The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) Housing and Access Support Service delivered a workshop on Sustainable Housing Design to the Mayo Sustainable Housing Network on 25th September 2012. The workshop considered the particular accessibility features within a sustainable housing design brief; focusing on the objectives and deliverables of three different design approaches including:
- Visitable Design,
- Lifetime Adaptable Design,
- Wheelchair Accessible Design.
The IWA also has a housing initiative which encourages and supports people with disabilities who wish to live in their own homes to apply for social housing through City and County Councils. As part of this initiative they have a developed a website to provide further information, guidance and support on all aspects of accessible housing.
