The National Disability Authority Celebrates 20 Years
In celebration of their 20th anniversary, the National Disability Authority (NDA) has published a book that outlines the origin of the NDA and how they have evolved and expanded since the organisation was established on 12th June 2000.
The NDA is an independent body that provides evidence-informed advice to the Irish Government in relation to policy and practice applicable to the lives of persons with disabilities. More specifically, the NDA assists the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth in the co-ordination of the disability policy.
The organisation has a range of functions which includes the following:
- Research,
- Assisting in standard development,
- Developing codes of practice,
- Monitoring the implementation of standards, codes and employment of persons with disabilities in the public service.
It is important to note that the NDA’s role extends far beyond disability as they also contribute to the design of the built environment, services, and information and communications technology through their Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) which was established in 2007. The CEUD promotes Universal Design (UD) of the built environment to make it more inclusive for as many people as possible.
The NDA’s 20th anniversary book is a summary of the key milestones in the establishment and development of the organisation over the past 20 years. The publication reflects on the achievements to date and highlights the importance of continuing to work towards and implementing their vision in the coming years.
