The Minister for Disabilities, Anne Rabbitte, has recently launched a new information line for people with autism. The new information line is operated by AsIAm and is supported by the HSE.

The new information line is expected to operate four hours per day and five days per week. The aim of the service is to provide information, guidance and signposting support for autism. The service is currently operated by a small number of qualified and trained staff who provide responses for any enquiries from autistic people.

The new information line is a free telephone, information line, email and webchat service which forms part of AsIam’s aim to empower peope with autism and their community to manage the day-to-day challenges and barriers they encounter. The line is intended to provide the following services:

Answer general questions about autism;
Highlight where and how you access support services in an individual’s local area;
Provide written resources that might be useful;
Provide information on other organisations that may be able to provide help;
Explain and talk through on how to go about explaining autism to other people and services;
Provide information on how to access Welfare Services, Community Health Care, Employment.

The new information line is supported by Eithne and Paddy Fitzpatrick memorial Fund, The Ireland Fund, The Community Foundation for Ireland and the Keith Duffy Foundation. The line has been tested over a period of two months and has already responded to over 700 enquiries. The line was launched in order to address the increase in demand for support and guidance from the community due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
