Some simple tips for effective communication and improving your service delivery
The following is a list of five tips to ensure effective communication and improve your service delivery for people with disabilities.
- Make sure your facility is accessible and that you know where the accessible facilities are. It is important that you know where accessible car parking bays; accessible WCs and waiting areas are within the building and can provide this information to people in advance of their visit. Always make sure your information is up to date and accurate.
- Always ask before providing assistance to a person with a disability. If someone requires assistance, ask how you can help them and ensure you wait for their instructions on how to help. Be flexible to adapt your service to accommodate the needs of the individual.
- It is important to note most people with vision impairments have excellent hearing. Therefore there is no need to shout but make sure you speak clearly and naturally.
- When guiding someone with vision impairment offer your arm and walk slightly in front of them. As you walk, describe the surroundings as this will allow the person to orientate in their surroundings.
- When speaking to people with an intellectual disability always speak directly to the person and not the carer. Remember the carer is only there to provide assistance. It is important to note that people with intellectual disabilities may find it difficult to understand complex information. Therefore keep your language easy to understand and uncomplicated. Don’t try to rush someone with an intellectual disability as they may become confused. Be prepared to repeat the information if required.
