Aids to Communication and Part M 2010
Technical Guidance Document (TGD) M 2010 comes into operation on the 1st of January 2012. Aids to communication is covered in Section 1 & 2 of TGD M 2010 and covers design criteria such as signage, visual contrast, lighting and audible aids. The goal is to make provision for adequate aids of communication to assist people with vision or hearing impairment or people with intellectual disabilities, in accessing a building and to be able to fully utilise the facilities and environs within the building.
The following is some guidance provided in the TGD in relation to signage:
- Signage should be designed to be as clear, short and concise as practicable.
- Text on signage should use both upper and lower case lettering and not be set entirely in capital letters. This will allow users to read the shape of the word
- The design of visual signage should consider height, layout, font size, font type, the use of symbols and colour contrast with the background.
- Where directional and information signage is located low enough to be touched, tactile signage should be considered. Tactile signage should be designed using embossed lettering, symbols and/ or Braille.
- Signage should include the International Symbol for Access to indicate such facilities as entrances, sanitary and other facilities within a building as necessary.
- Signage/Standard symbols to indicate induction loops or infrared hearing enhancement systems should be used as required.
- The location of signage should be considered within circulation routes such as signage which may require a significant amount of time to read will not obstruct the route for other users.
- Additional guidance should be referred to and is available in BS8300:2009.
Over the coming months we will provide additional information on visual contrast, lighting and audible aids. As part of our upcoming February newsletter we will provide additional information on visual contrast between certain elements and Light Reflectance Value.
