About the Programme
This course has been designed to highlight how museums, heritage sites and galleries can improve their services and make them more accessible to all including people with disabilities.
The course will cover the importance of inclusive thinking across all of the museum’s or gallery’s activities, the need for consultation with existing and potential users, the effective use of information and communication to improve access and national and international best practice in this area.
Aim
The aim of this practical workshop is ensure that those who manage museums and galleries understand how to design and deliver appropriate policies and plans to ensure their collections, buildings, information and services are accessible for all.

Key Outcomes
Upon completion of this programme, participants will:
- Appreciate the requirements of the Equality and Disability legislation and develop an understanding of the role of the individual and organisation in delivering on those requirements;
- Understand the importance of making their physical site accessible to all customers and be able to adopt creative and sensitive solutions in the adaptation and management of their properties;
- Appreciate how to effectively communicate with and include people with disabilities in the action planning processes;
- Understand the importance of accessible pre-visitor and on-site interpretive information including organising events, exhibitions, seminars, guided tours and programmes;
- Know how to make their customer services accessible to all and develop an awareness of practical measures in relation to accessible service delivery and equality issues; and
- Identify key access priorities for the immediate future.
