How to Make Buildings Accessible - One Day Course
About the Programme
This one day training course introduces participants to the key principles of Universal Access and Universal Design to ensure all aspects of the built environment are accessible. A practical workshop allows participants to gain an understanding of the latest best practice design criteria relating to accessibility and explores topics including the design of new and existing buildings, the importance of accessibility in the procurement process, ensuring the day to day management of buildings incorporates accessibility, Disability Access Certificate applications, Part M 2010 and access to historic buildings and places.
Aim
The overall aim of this training is to provide participants with an overview of how to make buildings accessible to all, what standards and guidance should be utilised and how to ensure that the planning, design, construction, day-to-day management and procurement of the built environment incorporates accessibility at all stages.

Key Outcomes
Upon completion of this programme, learners will:
- Appreciate the requirements of building control, equality, health and safety and disability legislation and how they affect accessibility of the built environment;
- Understand the concepts of Universal Accessibility and Universal Design;
- Explore the key design criteria for an accessible building and its surroundings and understand the key amendments of Part M 2010 and Technical Guidance Document M 2010;
- Understand and appreciate the barriers faced by people (regardless of age, size or disability) accessing the built environment; and
- Strengthen their knowledge on the importance of accessibility in relation to planning, design, construction, day-to-day management and procurement of the built environment.
