Accessible Housing Design - One Day Course
About the Programme
This programme introduces participants to the key principles of accessible and inclusive housing policy and design. The practical workshop covers the latest national and international developments in accessible housing (e.g. The National Housing Strategy for People with Disabilities) and is highly interactive, with videos, discussions, case studies, design reviews and everyday examples of barriers faced by people with disabilities within the home.
Aim
This course aims to equip housing officers, occupational therapists, contractors, engineers, Local Authority personnel, planners, architects, suppliers and designers with the knowledge and skills to maximise the accessibility of new housing and renovation projects and to ensure effective planning for people with disabilities is adequately considered and addressed in housing policy.

Key Outcomes
Learners who successfully complete this course will:
- Develop an understanding of the current legislative requirements relating to accessible housing and building design.
- Appreciate all the potential users of dwellings including older people and people with disabilities.
- Reflect on learning's from national and international best practice and how it could be applied in their projects.
- Strengthen their knowledge of Universal Design, particularly in how it applies in a domestic setting.
- Develop plans, designs and product knowledge to produce more accessible housing.
- Have increased awareness of Lifetime Homes; Wheelchair accessible housing and accessible housing policy developments.
